The most important thing at this stage is to choose a niche in which you can call yourself an authority - the biggest mistake new bloggers make in such a crowded blogosphere is to start a blog without trying to do something amazing or unusual.

Check out other blogs - this should be your first port of call. What's already successful? And more importantly, what's missing? Find gaps in the market.
Use Google - What are people looking for? Use Google's search terms and autocomplete to see what people are looking for - if they are looking for it, it shows that there is demand.
Search the forums for frequently asked questions. When people cannot find answers to their questions, they go to the forums. What are they asking? What advice do they need? This will show what people are interested in and what the available information is lacking about.
Track Current Trends - What Are The Topics In The Media Now? It's good to pick a topic with a long history, but if you can catch a trend early on, you can quickly establish yourself as the earliest expert on it. Think of the different types of content - could you please do some tutorials/how-tos? Reviews? Interview? Lists? It may not be what you write about that sets you apart, but how you write.
Identify your own interests and hobbies. While all of the above are important, there is no point in blogging about things that don't interest you. You will quickly get bored and people will notice your lack of enthusiasm. Write about what really excites you.
